Tech Challenge Podcast 1

As part of my University degree in Film Radio ant TV I have to create a 3 part podcast. The idea for this one is that it would sit on a website such as mashable, gizmodo, tech crunch etc and each week would be a different challenge similar to that of the gadget show. Week 1 it has to be made entirely from a phone. Please listen and let me know your thoughts so that I can change this/ work towards the next one.

Suspect Package Reported

Today, all ready to do my show on CSR FM, covering the Wednesday drivetime slot- 45 mins go fine and then I go to ready the travel update for the 4PM update and one report says “Broad Street Closed due to suspect package incident.”
Quick refresh of twitter all local news groups reporting same thing- OH dear out goes ALL the show content- Rest of the show becomes a rolling news update and travel advise from various news and twitter feeds.
It was mental but exciting to be reporting breaking news stories, especially something so important to local listeners.
It showed me what I really want to do though is be a producer (I knew this anyway) as I had to do everything single handed as no one else was available. I literally had 6 mins (2 songs) to rewrite every report that came in as they changed really quickly.

Hope it sounded good- I know I was a bit stumbly thats because I had no time to prep what to say but shall listen back tomorrow.

I don’t want to bore my twitter followers but here are some random thoughts that I thought might get me some un follows so can post them here.

Radio one were in Ibiza and I love their imaging that they are using for it. It is the same every year and I love it!
I have started my new job as a driver for boots and love it!
I went for a run this morning. Bliss.

On the talk of radio got chatting to my friend last night at a party and he said I remind him of zane Lowe as apparently I talk so passionately about music. I took this as a big compliment as normally I’m compared to Aled of chris moyles.
He then went on to ask if I am a voice over for Kiss, I am not but apparently it sounds like me so am going to try and have a listen.

A Bad Nightclub

So last night I went out for a few drinks. We ended up going to a nightclub in town called Infinty.
This nightclub has changed na,es several times but it’s always had the same bad reputation. Recently it has become a lot more popular. I really don’t know why as after going in it has remained exactly the same.
First issue of the night, I didn’t get id’ed (I get ID everywhere!) no one was and resulted in a room half full of 16 year olds.
Second issue advertised drink offer on Facebook was very vague and non existent.
And then the final issue was the DJ. Being a DJ myself I am very critical, this is not because I want his slot. But he was terrible. There would be 4 songs mixed well and then he would change style of music completely. Don’t get me wrong his few dub step songs were good. What made the DJ so bad was his mcing. He did not go one minute without shouting over the mic.

So when I come home I voice my concerns on the clubs Facebook page. What happens next…. The page you are looking for is unavailable. That means I’m blocked! What bad PR if they receive negative feedback they should have replied to my comment publicly and offered an apology or something. This would show that they listen to the comments and try to reply to bad feedback. No instead they want a sqeeky clean Facebook wall with only good comments.
Personally on the CSR Facebook page any bad comments we reply to and resolve the solution
Dominos pizza on twitter will always try and help people if they have had a bad order and send them vouchers. That is how to do good marketing.

Student Radio Awards

Having only been with CSR FM for less than a year this is my first experience of entering the Student Radio Awards. We were really well planned…. we thought. However due to a reading error (possibly on my part, but no one is pointing the fingers!) We were 5 days out, the deadline was not the 25th its the 20th!

So began a marathon of editing of months and months of audio logs. I had my entry done and bang ERROR! so I had to redo that. Then we went to Lounge on the Farm, (wait did I not mention that? No big deal- VIP access press pass, got to watch all the acts side of stage, walked past Ellie Goulding and had a photo with Example) (Oh and Free drinks on the Friday night)

Anyway all a bit manic, long story short some very late nights editing and we are so nearly finished only a few days to go.

Along the way we decided to make some vlogs for our new website which are rather entertaining!

Mobile Discossss

Been back on the mobile disco scene in suffolk now that uni is over and that schools are ending I have been doing a fair few. I had one last week alongside The Exceptions (local band) which was great as I didnt have to do a full 4hr evening and also plugged into their sound system.

What was great about this one was I did get to play alot of random songs in my 45 min set. They included; Madcon- Beggin, Scouting For Girls, Amy Winehouse and Wham to name a few!

Also did a kids party this afternoon. The great thing about kids parties is they are in the afternoon leaving the evening free!

The weird world of pre records

I genuinely don’t really know what day it is today all because my days and times are completely confused due to The world of pre records!
Due to everyone going home our CSR schedule has got rather empty so myself and Mel Lewis did a few pre records to fill it.
The weird thing is we had to log into our sustainer to see what music would get played out and then record each link. It’s not the best content we have ever done but the links are smooth and it means we have more presenters on air.
Not only this but we were recording at odd times of the day so doing Monday afternoon on Wednesday evening!

Another thing I have done is cover for the spec music show we love house with my own dance music called warm up to the weekend. It was fun recording it but I felt very commercial. A 2nd show took 20minutes to do so it does save time for me! A very strange thing is that I can hear my show being played out right now while I’m at home 90miles away from the studio!

A week of radio

This week has been bloody mental.

Monday- helping a breakfast show as one presenter was away so 6am start.

Tuesday- not as mental but still rather busy.

Wednesday- Visit to local primary school as part of one of the shows new feature, produce wednesday drivetime, go to our radio stations speech awards (plan not to drink) go to The Venue (Kent uni nightclub) get very drunk sleep in the CSR meeting room

Thursday- Breakfast show with Jezza, good banter with him as always. Came home sleep go out to CSR indiecate night

Friday- Get up breakfast show with Lucy. Do CSR work all day. DJ at the Christ Church Uni Summer Ball, get amazing VIP treatment. Me and Mel Lewis had a soundclash which, well, she won but it was a team effort! Then I had to DJ for Jodie Connor (of roll deep) on the main stage infront of 1,000+ people which was amazing! Got a free fry up at 3am and then a lollipop when we left.

Saturday- Woke up still drunk and then went to Artsfest (its a yearly Kent uni music festival) CSR was broadcasting all day, I had a 2 hr slot which was awesome, ended the night by having a little rave in the studio!

Such a good week and this week will probably be just as busy as I have a load of SRA Award entries to sort and 3 shows to plan for!

So I have been really, really, really busy recently.

Since last friday I have been at an OB with CSR producing a cricket commentary, had a friend come and stay and we went out with CSR and we party. We party HARD! Then I spontaneously did a breakfast show on Monday. Followed by a board meeting of CSR and I have lived in the studio ever since! Tomorrow morning I have my breakfast show so its all go, go at the moment. Need sleep.

Website update & Breakfast Show

I have not updated this for a while, but I think thats what this blog has become, random posts every now and again!

After having a meeting yesterday about the CSR website being updated and soon to be completed it inspired me to update mine. Refresh the content on the site and also the site design. Im still playing around with it but I’m happy with it.

Also I had my first breakfast show on CSR this morning. The thing I was worried most about was content for some reason but as far as I am aware the features went down really well. Had some good feedback and have been feeling really good from it. I shall be listening to the logs over the weekend while I study in the library so I can tell for myself, and when I get time inbetween revision I will be making a podcast. The one thing that was the worst thing ever to say which makes me cringe so much is I said “Text me and tell me who you are and where you are ” which is just awful and not at all what I meant to say but its all a great learning curve. So hopefully with some critical and constructive feedback next weeks show will be even better.
